Lucky for you lot - I do small demo reviews for Junxxion 17 magazine so here's a few choice cuts from the archives. Anyone wanting their cd given similar treatment give me a yell, innit.
The Panic - "Live EP"
Fast becoming one of the most exciting live bands of the local scene, this first demo combines vast walls of guitars with some killer tunes and is topped off by excellent vocal interchanging. What’s also impressive was that this cd was recorded live and sounds tonnes better than a lot of expensively recorded demos, which is a credit to the band. Worth searching out for “A Day Late” alone, a really classy number. Go seek! www.thepaniconline.com
Neo-Geek – “Anyone But Me”
Trowbridge-based Neo-Geek have graduated from the University of Indie Pop with flying colours. The title track is a perky romp reminiscent of Feeder complete with chiming guitars, punchy drums and even a fake ending that leads nicely back into the final chorus. The flipside, “Give It All You Got” is a Vines flavoured hippifyed lazy summer strum with some nice harmony parts, beefed up with some chunkier guitars about halfway through. Nice. www.neo-geek.com
Harvey – “Hello Bob!”
Genuinely charming acoustic folk-pop that that something for everyone from the happy clappy flower-child anthem of the summer “Helping Hand” through the bleak and introspective “Always”. Bearing in mind that it’s basically vocals and acoustic guitars here, there’s still enough going on in the background to make each track varied and interesting for the listener thanks to the worthy addition of cello and percussion parts that complete this aural experience. www.harveymusic.co.uk
Home From Home - "EP"
Today’s Special - Sharp, abrasive blasts of harmony drenched punk pop, served with a tight rhythm section drizzled over with 2 different varieties of guitar. There’s a lot of promise on here, there’s a real craft to the songs and all the choruses are instantly memorable – something to yell along to whilst in the pit. CD closer “Idle Eyes” is particulary enjoyable. www.hfhband.com

The Panic – “How To Answer” EP
I’ll be honest; I’d been looking forward to hearing this cd for a long time having been captivated by The Panic’s always energetic live show. Anyway, here’s their new 4 track offering and from the outset, it’s fairly obvious that the lads have raised the bar from their two previously released efforts. This ep should sit proudly next to the works of Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Picasso as it’s nothing short of a masterpiece.
One of the things that The Panic manage that a lot of bands can’t is create a sound that is universally appealing to a lot of different people. Sure they have the crunching angular guitars and angsty yells that will keep the average (dare I say it) emo kid entertained but all the songs on this disc have serious pop sensibilities that will appeal to a much wider audience. Rose and Bailes’ twin vocals compliment each other exceptionally over all the sonic carnage crashing around them, the songs seamlessly shifting from furious trash to delicate note picking. This truly is a hallmark of genius.
“Eyes Down” is a particular favourite as it outlines the point perfectly. This track swings back and forth numerous times between huge lurching metal riffage and shredding pure white noise that the great Sonic Youth would be proud of. All it needs now are the obligatory drumsticks wedged twixt strings and fretboards… and then – one solitary ringing chord and the song breaks down into a haunting bridge before the cacophonous noise returns from the pub to grab it by the throat. Brilliant.
A lot of you will already be familiar with the track “A Day Late”. If this song doesn’t get The Panic a record deal alone then there’s a lot of stupid record company execs out there. Everything that you could want from a perfect pop song is here in attendance, from the subtle vocal interchange verses to the “hands aloft” sing along chorus that would melt even the stoniest of hearts. Hell, they’ve even thrown in a noisy bit for good measure! I love these guys!!!
All in all, there’s nothing to fault on this ep. It is, in a word, perfect. People of Wiltshire, treasure these guys whilst you still can – they won’t be around these here parts for much longer…

I actually love the panic! I saw that home from home quote before aswell actually, the 'sharp, abrasive' bit sounds cool.
